For almost all of 2023, I worked on a series of illustrations meant to provoke reflection and practice , all within an Afrofuturist lens, called We All Get To Dream.

This series has actually been a critical channel for me to put my anxious and grieving heart into, after witnessing the abandonment of the commitment to “equity” that so many institutions, allies and accomplices championed in 2020. Afrofuturism has reminded me of who can we turn to when no one will stand in the gap for us…Ourselves. It is both contemplative and active. It is dreaming put into action.

The first part of the series tried to answer the question, What are Black people SEEKing in the pursuit of a future thriving? The second part of the series explored what AFROFUTURISM is as reflection and practice? For this part, I tried to align my art with what seems to be resonant with how Black folks (and perhaps others) are wayfinding in an antiblack world.

A bit about the art itself. The art is all done by me. The prints are giclee. Giclee printing (pronounced zhee-clay) is a method of printing to create extremely high quality prints. Additionally, all 16 prints have an Augment Reality feature - use your phone to unlock surprise interactive experiences that combine the art with additional computer-generated content that matches the context of the image.

This piece is called “Descendants AR Print - Special Edition”. It useds Augmented Reality, but unlike the other 15 pieces which are static, there is computer generated motion in the AR functionality of it.
